HC Deb 08 May 1939 vol 347 c3
3. Mr. Day

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India in what ways the censorship of films has altered in British India during the previous three years; and what reports has he received of films that have been prohibited from exhibition during the same period?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

Since 1st April, 1937, film censorship in India is exercised by Ministers, and as the hon. Member is aware, my Noble Friend does not in general receive official reports from them in regard to matters which fall within the authority of autonomous Provincial Governments. I am not in a position, therefore, to give the information asked for.

Mr. Day

Do I understand that the Minister has no information about the changes that have taken place with regard to censorship?

Lieut.-Colonel Muirhead

There are, of course, certain changes in connection with the Government of India Act, 1935. Previously it was a provincial transferred subject, and now the question of film censorship is one of those which are in the hands of the provincial ministries.
