HC Deb 04 March 1937 vol 321 c541
70. Sir George Mitcheson

asked the Postmaster-General whether he is aware that a substantial proportion of telephone calls on the automatic system are ineffective, due apparently to weakness of the springs in the dials; and what steps are being taken to remedy the defect?

Major Tryon

Little trouble arises from the weakness of dial springs, but occasional difficulty is experienced from the springs getting out of adjustment. Dial faults for the country as a whole, however, only amount to about one fault per annum for every seven telephones. Exceptional difficulties may arise on the conversion of an exchange to automatic working and special attention is given in such cases until conditions become normal.

Mr. H. G. Williams

Is my right hon. Friend aware that one-half of the calls made on the dials in this building are ineffective?
