HC Deb 04 March 1937 vol 321 cc540-1
68. Mr. Lyons

asked the Postmaster-General what is the minimum town-to-town distance for trunk telephone calls to be charged at per minute rates after the first three minutes; and whether he is prepared to adopt this system for all distance telephone calls?

The Postmaster-General (Major Tryon)

Any trunk telephone call for a chargeable distance greater than 35 miles is timed in units of one minute after the first three minutes. Sweeping reductions in trunk telephone tariffs were made in October, 1934, and again last May. I am not in a position at Present to make any further reduction, but when next the question is under review I will bear in mind my hon. and learned Friend's suggestion.

Mr. Lyons

While thanking the Postmaster-General for his reply, may. I ask him whether he intends to reconsider this matter so that a person having a four-minute call in this smaller area is not charged for six minutes?

Major Tryon

My hon. and learned Friend's suggestion will, of course, be considered, but there are various other concessions which ought to be considered at the same time.
