HC Deb 17 May 1909 vol 5 cc28-9
Sir JOHN DEWAR

asked the Lord Advocate why the Congested Districts Board have reduced their contribution towards the formation of footpaths in the island of Harris from 75 per cent. of the cost to 50 per cent., and have altogether refused to help in the formation of a much-needed road at the Bay of Harris?

Mr. URE

The Congested Districts Board do not make grants for footpaths in any fixed or invariable proportion to the total cost, but deal with each application on its merits, making such a grant as seems justified by the circumstances. As regards the Bay of Harris road the Board have carefully considered the application, but so far they are not satisfied that a sufficient case for the grant which has been asked for has been made out.

Sir JOHN DEWAR

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is one of the most necessitous districts in the Highlands of Scotland?

Mr. URE

Yes, Sir.

Mr. YOUNGER

asked as to the reason of the difficulty experienced by the Congested Districts Board in getting land?

Mr. URE

I should like notice of that question.
