Mr. WEIR

said he wished to ask the Lord Advocate what steps the Congested Districts (Scotland) Board proposed to take to deal with and relieve the congestion existing in many of the townships of the island of Lewis; and would the Congested Districts Board confer with the proprietor of the island with a view to breaking up into small holdings some of the farms not under lease?

Mr. URE

It is not possible to deal with the large and complex problem of congestion in the Island of Lewis within the limits of question and answer, but, as my hon. Friend has already been informed, the Congested Districts Board are at present in communication with the proprietor in regard to one case of this kind.

asked whether in other parts-of the Island of Lewis there were lands not under lease, and would the Secretary for Scotland endeavour to make some arrangement for them to be looked at?
