HC Deb 17 May 1909 vol 5 cc31-2
Mr. GWYNN

asked the President of the Board of Trade if there are any regulations governing the number of hours that the driver of an electric car may work on a stretch; and if such regulations are carefully observed by the London United Electric Tramways Company

Mr. CHURCHILL

No such regulations have been issued by the Board of Trade.

Mr. GWYNN

May I ask if the facts have not proved the necessity for such regulations being made?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The powers of the Board of Trade in regard to these tramways are limited to intervention on grounds of public safety, but I am quite prepared to consider any information that is brought to my notice, and to act upon it so far as the statutory powers of the Board of Trade allow.

Mr. GWYNN

Does not the right hon. Gentleman consider that public safety is involved when men are employed for excessive hours in the driving of electric cars?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I certainly think that excessive strain upon persons in a position of that character would be calculated to involve public safety.

Mr. GWYNN

I will communicate with my right hon. Friend.
