HC Deb 17 May 1909 vol 5 c31
Lord ROBERT CECIL

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the whole-time officers in the South Wales district employed in the inspection of ships' provisions are allowed to take part in political propaganda or other political work?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The instruction issued by the Board of Trade to their officers on this subject requires them to act discreetly in all matters in which their conduct may become the subject of public criticism, and forbids them to take a prominent part in party politics.

Lord ROBERT CECIL

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that one of the officers referred to is the Secretary of the Local Federation of Free Church Councils, and has taken a very active part in the propaganda of that body, travelling as much as 2,508 miles in their service?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I cannot attempt to discuss any individual case without private notice beforehand and an opportunity of looking into the case.

Lord ROBERT CECIL

Will the right hon. Gentleman make inquiry into the case? It is exciting a great deal of attention in South Wales.

Mr. CHURCHILL

Any communication that I receive from the Noble Lord will, of course, be attended to.
