HC Deb 10 May 1909 vol 4 c1434
Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the proposed tax on petrol, even after allowing the rebate of 50 per cent. to commercial vehicles, will involve an additional expense from a ¼d. to a ½d. per mile in the case of commercial and public service vehicles; and, if so, whether he intends to take any, and, if so, what, steps to impose an equivalent tax upon other and competitive vehicles of a similar character not propelled by petrol?

Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE

I am not in a position to say whether the figures given by the hon. Member are correct. As regards the latter part of the question, I do not propose to levy a tax upon vehicles in the propulsion of which petrol is not employed.

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

Will not a preference be given to other vehicles which are not propelled by petrol?
