HC Deb 10 May 1909 vol 4 cc1434-5
Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, having regard to the fact that he is proposing to place only half the additional tax upon motor cars owned by doctors for use in their profession, he will, on the same principle, give them a rebate upon the petrol they consume?

Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE

I am already making a considerable concession to doctors in respect of the licences for their motor cars, and I am inclined to doubt whether there is sufficient reason for also granting them a rebate on the petrol which they consume.

Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

Will the right hon. Gentleman receive a deputation of doctors on the subject, seeing that he has this afternoon stated that he will receive one from veterinary surgeons who use petrol?

Mr. LLOYD-GEORGE

I never like to refuse receiving deputations from any interest affected by Bills I have brought in, but this is a question of time. If I can I certainly will receive any deputation which is representative.

Mr. CHIOZZA MONEY

Will my right ton. Friend give consideration to the fact that in the case of the doctor this is a special income tax, because he uses petrol for the purpose of earning his income? On what principle does the right hon. Gentleman impose on the medical profession what amounts to the levying of a special income tax?
