HC Deb 26 July 1909 vol 8 cc853-4
Mr. WEIR

asked the Lord Advocate, having regard to the fact that the lease of the farm of Reef, in the parish of Uig, Island of Lewis, comprising 93 acres old arable and 45 acres pasture, has just run out, and that the farm was scheduled by the Deer Forest Commissioners as suitable for new holdings, will the Secretary for Scotland ascertain from the proprietor, Major Matheson, whether he is willing to break up the farm for occupation by the people?

Mr. URE

I am aware that the greater part of the farm was scheduled by the Deer Forest Commissioners as suitable for new holdings, and from the information before me it appears that the lease will run out at Whit Sunday, 1910; the crofters, and cottars of Valtos and Kneep, who recently petitioned Major Matheson to break up the farm, sent a copy of their correspondence to the Congested Districts Board, but they had not then received their final reply from Major Matheson.
