HC Deb 14 July 1909 vol 7 c2020
Mr. GINNELL

asked the hon. Member for South Somerset, as representing the President of the Board of Agriculture, what official is responsible for the correct naming of places on Irish Ordnance maps; how does he account for the numerous instances of the application of offensive nicknames in substitution of the ancient names, historical or descriptive, by which the places are still known among the people; and whether he will have this practice stopped and the correct names, when obtainable, inserted in future editions of those maps?

The TREASURER of the HOUSEHOLD (Sir Edward Strachey)

The Director-General of the Ordnance Survey is responsible for the names of places appearing on the Ordnance maps. The practice is to give the names as they are locally known. If the hon. Member will supply any instances of the use of offensive nicknames I will have inquiry made into the matter.
