HC Deb 27 October 1908 vol 195 c63
MR. O'GRADY

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that, in the matter of the public instituting criminal proceedings against the police in India, the appellant has not only to take the risks of wrongful proceedings set out in Section 211 of the Indian Penal Code, but also to face the act that the financial resources of the Government are at the disposal of the police, and compensation paid though the charge be proven; and, if so, whether an assurance can be given that this matter will be inquired into, with a view of reverting to the previous position of the Government standing aloof and only compensating the police in the event of the proceedings against them not being successful.

MR. BUCHANAN

The Secretary of State is not aware of any practice of paying compensation in the manner described in the Question, but if the hon. Member will give fuller and authentic particulars, he will at once consider the desirability of inquiring.

MR. O'GRADY

I will do so.
