HC Deb 18 May 1908 vol 188 c1606
MR. FIELD (Dublin, St. Patrick)

To ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland whether the Intermediate Board can, in the interests of commencial students, include handwriting, orthography, and elementary arithmetic under the general head of English, giving special marks for each sub-division; and whether they will do so in their Syllabus for 1909.

(Answered by Mr. Birrell.) The Intermediate Education Board inform me that they have directed their examiners to pay special attention to the spelling and handwriting of students, and have made provision for a deduction of marks for deficiencies in these matters. The programme for 1909 is still under the Board's consideration.
