HC Deb 20 July 1908 vol 192 c1454
CAPTAIN FABER (Hampshire, Andover)

To ask the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that a number of Government employees cannot obtain leave to attend camp except by giving up their only annual holiday, by surrendering to a substitute who does their civil work their civil pay during the period of camp, a twenty-fifth of their income, receiving in its stead their military pay of 1s. a day, or by remaining in their offices to work overtime clay after day until they have made up the hours which they have made fitting themselves for the defence of their country; and whether in view of his appeal to private employers of labour to grant fifteen days special leave to their employees, he proposes to take any action to secure similar facilities for Civil servants.

(Answered by Mr. Hobhouse.) I am disposed to think that the difficulties experienced by Civil servants in attending the camp trainings are not so great as are suggested in the hon. Member's Question; but if will submit to me any actual cases of hardship within his knowledge I will inquire into them.
