HC Deb 09 July 1907 vol 177 c1413
Mr. SWIFT MACNEILL (Donegal, S.)

To ask the Postmaster-General whether letters, newspapers, books, and parcels despatched from Egypt to an address in the United Kingdom are carried by the French mail boats running between Marseilles and Egyptian ports; and, if not, will he say why this is not done.

(Answered by Mr. Sydney Buxton). Mails containing correspondence for the United Kingdom are despatched from Egypt by the French mail packets for Marseilles, but those vessels do not convey parcel mails for this country. The Egyptian Post Office makes its own arrangements for the conveyance of its mails, and doubtless considers the parcel post traffic to be sufficiently provided for by sending mails twice a week by way of Brindisi and once a week by the direct sea route to the Thames.
