HC Deb 09 July 1907 vol 177 c1422
Mr. J. DEVLIN (Belfast, W.)

To ask the President of the Board of Trade whether his attention has been called to the placing on the market of imitations of Belfast-made wax candles by English firms for the purpose of deceiving customers, and to the injury to Irish trade resulting there from; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

(Answered by Mr. Kearley.) The hon. Member recently called the attention of the Board of Trade to a case of this kind, but I understand the Belfast manufacturer whose trade mark was infringed has received an assurance from the English firm that the practice complained of will be discontinued. The case is one in which the aggrieved manufacturer has an adequate legal remedy under the Merchandise Marks Act, .and no action on the part of the Board of. Trade would seem to be necessary. If there are any other cases which the hon. Member has in mind, the Board of Trade will be happy to consider them if he will be good enough to supply particulars.
