HC Deb 16 July 1906 vol 160 c1310
MR. THORNTON (Clapham)

To ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether he has received the memorial forwarded in May last by the new class of assistant clerks in the Statistical Office, Customs; and, if so, whether he can state what steps have been taken to secure to the memorialists similar treatment to that enjoyed by their colleagues in other departments.

(Answered by Mr. McKenna.) The case of those clerks was fully considered early in the present year, and certain improvements were authorised in the scheme of promotion to superior posts. A further memorial on the subject has recently been received in the Treasury and is now under consideration. With regard to the last words of the hon. Member's Question, the conditions of employment in the Customs Department are necessarily determined with reference to the requirements of that particular service.
