FIELDTo ask the Secretary to the Treasury how many boy clerks were appointed by the Civil Service Commissioners during the year ended March 31st, 1310 1906; how many secured permanent positions in His Majesty's Civil Service; and how many, during the same year, were dismissed on attaining the age of twenty.
(Answered by Mr. McKenna.) I am informed that in the year referred to 762 boy clerks were added to the register. Two hundred and six boy clerks were removed from the register on being certificated for permanent appointments in the Civil Service, and in addition twenty-four left to take up appointments under Government of a quasi-permanent character or permanent public appointments not in the Civil Service. I understand that probably a considerable number obtained permanent positions after ceasing to be boy clerks, but it is not possible to say how many. The number of those removed from the register on attaining the age of twenty was 273, inclusive of boys who resigned their appointments as boy clerks very shortly before attaining the age of twenty.
