HC Deb 31 May 1904 vol 135 cc431-2
MR. BOLAND

To ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can state the total number of British subjects in Egypt and the Soudan, and how many of these are Maltese.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton.) According to the census of 1897 there were then 14,654 British subjects in Egypt exclusive of the Army of Occupation. Of these 6,481 were Maltese. No census has ever been taken in the Soudan, but the total number of British subjects there must be very small.
