§ MR. WHITLEYI beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he can state the amount received by the Transvaal Treasury from the gold mines profit tax during the year 1903, and the amount saved by the mines by reduced cost of dynamite in the same period.
§ MR. LYTTELTONThe receipts during the calendar year were £162,573. I understand that the reduction of the cost of dynamite, as compared with prices in 1899, is considerable, but I am not in a position to say what amount was saved by the mines in the year 1903, nor does the hon. Member make it clear with what year he desires a comparison to be made.
§ MR. WHITLEYI purposely put it in that way in order to give the right hon. Gentleman an opportunity to take any complete year he liked in both cases. Might I ask further whether the saving on account of dynamite was not greater than the total receipts of the tax.
§ MR. LYTTELTONIf the hon. Member will put down a general Question I will endeavour to answer it.
