HC Deb 23 June 1904 vol 136 cc988-9
MR. BUCHANAN (Perthshire, E.)

I bag to ask the Secretary of State for the Colonies what are the purposes to which the £5,000,000, now being borrowed by the Transvaal Government, are to be devoted, and how much money is to be spent on each specific object in view.

MR. LYTTELTON

The £5,000,000 now being borrowed are required, in addition to the £30,000,000 raised last year, for the purposes set forth in the schedule to the South African Loan and War Contribution Act, 1903, which gives the amount under each head of expenditure.

MR. WHITLEY (Halifax)

Can the right hon. Gentleman say that the amount of that schedule has not been varied.

MR. LYTTELTON

Statements will be laid this week on the subject.

MR. WHITLEY

But the right hon. Gentleman's reply to my hon. friend was to refer him to the schedule? I ask whether we can take it that the figures in that Schedule have not varied in the meantime.

MR. LYTTELTON

I must have notice.
