HC Deb 22 July 1904 vol 138 c948
MR. VINCENT KENNEDY (Cavan, W.)

To ask the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will explain why the subject of modern history has been omitted from the recent programme of regulations for entrance into the Consular Service.

(Answered by Earl Percy.) Modern history has never formed a subject of examination for the Consular Service and, however useful as an element in a liberal education, it is not one of the subjects a knowledge of which is essential to the discharge of the duties which Consular officers are called upon to perform.
