HC Deb 20 April 1904 vol 133 c673
MR. BRAND (Cambridgeshire, Wisbech)

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether clerks to petty sessions are allowed to take an active part in political or Parliamentary contests, or to become members of a political council within their own petty sessional district.

(Answered by Mr. Secretary Akers-Douglas.) I am not aware of any general rule on the subject. The clerks are appointed, by the magistrates, and hold office subject to such conditions as the magistrates think right to attach to their appointments.
