HC Deb 04 March 1902 vol 104 cc364-5
MR. SAMUEL YOUNG (Cavan, E.)

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether he received from the Down County Council a resolution, accompanied with a memorial list of wrecks and loss of life, urging the necessity for having Rock Angus lighted; and whether it is the intention of the Government to recommend the lighting of this spot at the entrance of Strangford Lough, in view of the casualties which have taken place at this spot in the absence of a light.

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

I have received from the Down County Council the resolution and memorial urging the necessity of a light on Rock Angus. The question was, I understand, considered some time ago by the Commissioners of Irish Lights, who were of opinion that the light was not one that should be provided at the expense of the General Lighthouse Fund, and further that the proposed light by itself would not be sufficient to make it safe for vessels to navigate the lough by night.

MR. SAMUEL YOUNG

Has the Board of Trade any control over the General Lighthouse Board?

MR. GERALD BALFOUR

It is no part of the business of the Board of Trade to initiate proposals for lighthouses.
