§ 29. Mr. Sheldonasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what further discussions he has had concerning alternative methods of providing a cross-Channel link.
§ Mr. PeytonThe only fixed cross-Channel link under discussion between the British and French Governments is the rail tunnel with roll-on/roll-off services for road vehicles.
§ Mr. SheldonIs not the right hon. Gentleman aware that the Prime Minister has repeatedly stated that he is in favour of open government and reductions of unnecessary secrecy'? Why, then, does his Department still continue to refuse to give the House estimates of traffic densities, which we know the right hon. Gentleman has and which he has consistently refused to give us? Will he reconsider this, and also consider the publication of a White Paper bringing up to date figures that are nine years old and now need urgent revision?
§ Mr. PeytonAs soon as the most up-to-date information is available, I will certainly consider issuing a White Paper.
§ Mr. SheldonThe right hon. Gentleman has it now.
§ Mr. PeytonThe hon. Gentleman tells me what information I have. I think that I know better than he does what information I have.
§ Mrs. Renée ShortIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that his predecessor in office promised the House the opportunity to debate the proposals for the cross-Channel link, whatever it was to be? Will he give the same undertaking, that the House will have the opportunity to debate the matter as soon as possible, and before any firm decisions are made about any further expenditure?
§ Mr. PeytonThat is a matter for my right hon. Friend the Leader of the House. I will only say that if there is a debate I very much hope that the hon. Lady will take part.
