HC Deb 10 March 1971 vol 813 cc401-2
30. Mr. Sheldon

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will now make a further statement on the Channel Tunnel.

Mr. Peyton

I have nothing to add at present to what I told the hon. Member on 17th February.—[Vol. 811, c. 45.]

Mr. Sheldon

Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware that what is wanted is the estimate of traffic densities? In a reply to me the Ministry stated that it has figures of traffic densities, but it has not disclosed what they are. Will he undertake to give a reply if I put this Question down again?

Mr. Peyton

Yes, Sir; in due course. The hon. Gentleman will be interested to know that further surveys are planned this summer—they should start in April —as part of the final studies for the project.

Mr. Maddan

Does my right hon. Friend agree that in view of the increasing traffic between England and the Continent what is needed is an early decision to go ahead with the tunnel?

Hon. Members

No. Mr.

Mr. Peyton

Yes, Sir.
