§ 12. Mr. Anthony Berryasked the Minister of Transport when the M4 motorway is now expected to be completed.
§ Mr. CarmichaelBy 1971. There are, however, difficulties on the 6¼ mile section between Winnersh and Holyport, as I mentioned on 20th November, which may in part prevent this.—[Vol. 754, c. 281.]
§ Mr. BerryIs the Minister aware that there is an ever-increasing need for the finishing of this road, particularly bearing in mind the needs of Wales, where road hauliers will have to pay much heavier charges because of the Transport Bill? Surely they deserve a decent road where no railway facilities are available?
§ Mr. CarmichaelWe are aware of the urgent need for this road. Unfortunately an unwithdrawn statutory objection makes it necessary to hold a public inquiry.
§ Mr. Robert CookeWill the Minister bear in mind the needs of Bristol in this matter, and tell the House how many miles of the M.4 have been both planned and started since October, 1964?
§ Mr. CarmichaelIf the hon. Member would put down a Question I would be able to give an Answer that would be more helpful to him than an off-the-cuff reply. The line is now fixed for the remaining 71 miles, between Tormarton in Gloucestershire and Winnersh southeast of Reading. If the hon. Member would like to put down a Question I will get more details.
