HC Deb 17 January 1968 vol 756 cc1755-6
23. Mr. Marten

asked the Minister of Transport if she will take steps to secure that all highway authorities place "Give Way" signs at least 100 yards back from the road junction.

Mr. Carmichael

No, Sir. Like all regulatory signs, "Give Way" signs are placed as near as possible to the point where their message applies. If the signs are not sufficiently visible to approaching drivers, advance warning signs should also be provided.

Mr. Marten

Does not the Minister agree that if these signs were in many cases placed considerably farther back, the driver would get much earlier warning of a forthcoming crossroads, which is what all this is in aid of? Will he consider this again also?

Mr. Carmichael

If the sign is too far away and a bend or a bridge intervenes, the sign is obscured at the point where the greatest impact should be made in warning the driver that he is approaching a junction. The signs are intended to be positioned where they will make the greatest impact as the driver is approaching the hazard. We feel that the distance at which these signs are placed should give him ample warning of an approaching hazard.
