HC Deb 30 November 1966 vol 737 cc444-5
31. Mr. Hamling

asked the Postmaster-General why letters sent by residents in the Eltham area of the London Borough of Greenwich to other residents in the area are cleared through the Catford office.

Mr. Joseph Slater

To reduce costs. This concentration of work on Catford is part of a wider scheme to reduce sorting work at a large number of offices in London.

Mr. Hamling

Is my hon. Friend aware that there is some dissatisfaction with the loss of service caused by this change? How much saving has been effected?

Mr. Slater

The saving is£10,000 a year. The action which we have taken has not worsened the service. In accordance with the policy announced by my right hon. Friend in August last year, in order to reduce costs and save manpower, a number of deliveries and collections in Eltham were reduced in May of this year.
