HC Deb 26 January 1966 vol 723 cc186-7
4. Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will consider providing a separate college for physical education in the west of Scotland, in view of the inadequate existing accommodation; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ross

I have approved proposals for the expansion of the Scottish School of Physical Education which forms part of Jordanhill College. This arrangement is more economical of staff and building resources than a separate college would be.

Mr. Dempsey

Does not my right hon. Friend agree that, with the growth of physical education curricula in Scottish schools, the time is approaching when we might have a separate unit of accommodation for physical education? Will he not reconsider this matter with a view to allowing such a new college to establish its own standards of attainment and progress in Scottish education?

Mr. Ross

We have looked at the need as we see it arising in this connection, and we think that what we propose is the best and most economical way of meeting that need.
