HC Deb 26 January 1966 vol 723 c187
5. Mr. Dempsey

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, in view of the uncontrolled development and abuses of "two-up" clubs, he will take steps to bring them under the control of the appropriate authorities; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Ross

My right hon. Friend the Home Secretary and I are reviewing the operation of the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1963, in its application to all gaming clubs, but I am not yet in a position to make a statement.

Mr. Dempsey

During his review, will my right hon. Friend bear in mind that this type of gambling club is open all night to ensnare men with their weekly wages, and will be remember the need to protect women and children from becoming destitute as the result of people losing their whole week's wages?

Mr. Ross

Yes, Sir; we are aware of certain serious abuses in this connection, and this is why we are determined to have another look at it.
