asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty what is the estimated cost of installing the Action Data automation equipment in H.M.S. "Eagle".

There are security objections to giving the cost, as it would divulge the magnitude of the scientific and engineering effort involved. I regret therefore that I do not feel I can give it.

In how many ships is it intended to install this gear?

Mr. Orr-Ewing

I do not think that I can give details of the programme so far ahead. As I said in the Estimates debate, we are starting with H.M.S. "Eagle" and we hope that in due course there will be a much wider application for the equipment in smaller ships, but that will be really a development of the initial equipment.
