HC Deb 08 March 1961 vol 636 cc439-40
4. Mr. Hayman

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty what arrangements exist in his Department for consultation with the National Parks Commission and the Dartmoor National Park Committee when extra facilities are wanted in that park outside the militarised zones.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

The Royal Marines occasionally use the Dartmoor National Park outside regular training areas for exercises not involving the use of live ammunition. We consult the Dartmoor National Park Committee, which is responsible to the National Park Commission for these local matters. when this use amounts to exercising greater rights than those enjoyed by the general public.

Mr. Hayman

Will the hon. Gentleman give instructions that these arrangements shall be rigidly observed, because there have been times when they have not been so observed?

Mr. Orr-Ewing

If the hon. Member cares to send me details of any of those times, I shall look into them. I know that the Royal Marines sometimes exercise around Burra Tor in night exercises with blank ammunition, but there is no population in that area and we do it only after advising the owner.

Mr. Hayman

May I stress that this is a National Park and not a normal exercising area?
