HC Deb 25 January 1961 vol 633 c152
32. Mr. Kitson

asked the Minister of Transport how many miles of dual carriageway are now open to traffic on the Great North Road between London and Newcastle; and how many are at present under construction.

Mr. Hay

There are 91 miles of dual carriageway now open to traffic between London and Newcastle. This is over one third of the total distance. Another 70 miles of dual carriageway are at present being constructed.

Mr. Woodburn

Are there to be any motorways on the Great North Road, or are all the plans to be confined to dual carriageways?

Mr. Hay

This is a little difficult, Mr. Speaker. The position is that some of the by-passes will be constructed to motorway standards, and for all practical purposes, except for the type of traffic that may use them, they will be motorway. Other stretches will be ordinary all-purpose dual carriageway. But there will be no motorway as such.
