HC Deb 06 May 1959 vol 605 cc367-8
2. Mr. P. Wells

asked the Secretary of State for War when it is proposed to close the Garrison at Sheerness; and what plans exist for its future.

The Under-Secretary of State for War (Mr. Hugh Fraser)

We shall not require Sheerness Barracks after this year and they will be put up for disposal.

Mr. Wells

Is not the Minister aware that, following the closure of the Sheppey dockyard, this inflicts a still further blow on the Isle of Sheppey? Will the Minister consult the local authorities about the disposal of the buildings and land?

Mr. Fraser

Certainly. At the appropriate moment we shall.
