§ I must explain now how the Exchequer has fared over the past year. The details will, of course, be shown in the White Paper later this afternoon and I will only summarise the figures now. Even so, I fear that hon. Members are likely to have more than their fill of figures and statistics during the next year or so. There is a story that Disraeli, when Lord Derby asked him whether he would be Chancellor of the Exchequer, pleaded ignorance of the duties he would have to perform. Lord Derby replied, "You know as much as Mr. Canning did, and, anyway, they give you the figures". Fortunately, that well-tried practice continues today.
