HC Deb 03 February 1958 vol 581 c795
19. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what steps he is taking to co-ordinate the publicity relating to the Government's plans for dealing with inflation.

Dr. Hill

Arrangements have been made to co-ordinate this publicity. There was issued at the end of November a booklet, "The Pound and Our Future", of which over 400,000 copies have now been sold. Other steps are now being considered. It is the Government's aim to provide the public with the necessary factual information about the fight against inflation.

Mr. Hughes

In view of his reputation as a tough negotiator and a militant trade union leader, will the right hon. Gentleman assure us that he will give trade union views about the cause of inflation prominence equal to that given to the views of the Government? Will he ensure that reference to the Rent Act and the result that it has had in increased wage demands and causing inflation will be fully circulated?

Dr. Hill

Government material about inflation, as in the case of the booklet, will deal with the problem in a non-party and non-partisan way. If any hon. Gentleman has taken the trouble to read the booklet, he will appreciate that that is true.
