HC Deb 03 February 1958 vol 581 cc794-5
17. Mr. Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what recent action he has taken to reduce the costs of his Department: and with what success.

Dr. Hill

A year ago I told the hon. Gentleman that I had a staff of two, apart from private secretaries, and that, in addition, the Prime Minister's Adviser on Public Relations and his Deputy assist me. I have made no increase in my staff.

Mr. Lewis

That does not answer my Question. I am asking what savings the right hon. Gentleman has made. Is he not aware that many people in the country, particularly the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, have asked all Departments to cut down and make savings? Can we have an assurance that he has or will cut down his staff and the money he spends?

Dr. Hill

I still have a staff of two, although the amount of work has greatly increased. I believe the House welcomes the increased activity on information services.
