HC Deb 03 February 1958 vol 581 c794
16. Mr. Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what permanent liaison has been established to co-ordinate the work of his Department with that of the United States Information Services.

Dr. Hill

None, Sir. Excellent relations, as between allies, exist between the United States authorities and the Departments responsible for overseas information. On matters of common concern, consultations are carried out through diplomatic channels.

Mr. Lewis

Surely there is a need for greater liaison than there appears to be at the moment. Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the United States Information Office regularly sends out information about its Government's activities? Can he tell us what he or his Department have done to explain to the American public, say, the reasons for the continual resignations from the Government and the Government's changes in policy? Does he do something along those lines?

Dr. Hill

The Question refers to the co-ordination of our information services with those of the United States. I am concerned with the co-ordination of our information services.

Mr. Anthony Greenwood

As there was obviously some consultation between the British Government and the American Government about the publication of details of Zeta, can the right hon. Gentleman give an assurance that there will not be future delays of the same kind?

Dr. Hill

I am not responsible for the negotiations between the Atomic Energy Commission and the Atomic Energy Authority in relation to the declassification and date of publication of the Zeta development.
