§ 31. Sir W. Anstruther-Grayasked the Secretary of State for Scotland to what extent local authorities have availed themselves of the provisions of the Agriculture (Improvement of Roads) Act, 1955.
§ Lord John HopeSo far sixteen authorities have submitted proposals for road improvement works. In view of the need to limit capital expenditure, no grants are being approved at present.
§ Mr. T. FraserWill not the Joint Under-Secretary of State consider with his right hon. Friend the desirability of giving effect to the provisions of this Act, which they were most anxious to get 231 through the House of Commons, with a view to promoting an expansion in agricultural production? Is there not now a need to expand agricultural production in Scotland?
§ Lord John HopeYes, Sir, there is, but, as the hon. Member knows very well, that has to be balanced against other things; and that is exactly what is being done.
