HC Deb 10 April 1957 vol 568 c1121
21. Mr. Janner

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation to what extent constructional work has started on the road improvement schemes listed on 31st October, 1956, for commencement by 31st March, 1957; what schemes have not been started and why; what change there is in the stated estimated completion dates; and if he will give the revised dates.

Mr. Watkinson

Work has started on all but 13 of the 37 schemes listed. The rest are being pressed on urgently but I cannot say at present what changes there are likely to be in the estimated completion dates.

Mr. Janner

When is the Minister likely to know when the changes are to be made? Is he still satisfied that the amount of work which he has put in hand, or has asked to be put in hand, is sufficient to meet the serious requirements of road traffic today?

Mr. Watkinson

I welcome the hon. Gentleman's attempt to chase the progress of my road schemes. I am just as anxious as he is to get them on as quickly as possible.

Captain Pilkington

On the overall picture, can my right hon. Friend say whether we are in advance or behind with road work generally, as estimated originally?

Mr. Watkinson

The road programme is going according to plan.
