HC Deb 12 November 1956 vol 560 c546
26. Mr. Warbey

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs on what dates prior to the delivery of the Anglo-French ultimatum to Egypt and Israel he communicated with the United States Government with regard to the use of force in solving the Suez Canal problem; and what was the nature of such communications.

Mr. Dodds-Parker

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given by my right hon. and learned Friend on 5th November to the hon. Member for South Ayrshire (Mr. Emrys Hughes),

Mr. Warbey

Would the Joint Under-Secretary deny that the American Ambassador in London was informed by Her Majesty's Government on 28th October that the British and French Governments did not intend to use force in order to settle the Suez Canal problem, and that on that very day the British and French Governments were already aware of the Israeli plans to attack Egypt, and were making their own plans to follow that attack with their own invasion?

Mr. Dodds-Parker

I am not prepared to give snap answers to that sort of snap supplementary.

Mr. Warbey

It is not a snap question.
