HC Deb 12 November 1956 vol 560 cc545-6
25. Mr. Warbey

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs from which countries he has received official representations against the actions of Her Majesty's Government in the Middle East.

Mr. Dodds-Parker

Official representations about Her Majesty's Government's intervention in Egypt have been received from the Governments of Iraq, Jordan, Libya, the Soviet Union, China, Indonesia and Nepal.

Mr. Warbey

Will the hon. Gentleman add to that list all the representations that have been made to British Ambassadors and Ministers in foreign capitals? If he gave this House a true list, would it not show how low this country's esteem has fallen as a result of the action of Her Majesty's Government?

Mr. Dodds-Parker

No. I rebut what the hon. Gentleman has said. He asked about official representations, and I have given a true answer to that question. As to what these Governments said at that time, and their initial reaction, there is now almost universal support for the proposal for a United Nations police force, and I hope that hon. Members opposite will support it.

Mr. Gower

Is it not a fact that some countries which have been so prompt in denouncing British action have been far less prompt in denouncing real and brutal aggression elsewhere?

Mr. Dodds-Parker

Certainly.
