HC Deb 16 November 1955 vol 546 c408
29. Mr. Palmer

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what steps he is taking to bring about an improvement in road conditions adjoining the railway bridge at the entrance to Saltburn, in order to ensure greater safety and a better public transport service.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

I am aware of conditions at this point. The North Riding County Council, which is the responsible highway authority, has put forward no proposal to me for grant in respect of works nor is any such work included in the five-year plan other than the raising of the footpaths, which has now been completed.

Mr. Palmer

Does the right hon. Gentleman appreciate that the need for an improvement at this place has been the subject of urgent representations by the local authorities most concerned and by industry and by the trade unions—by both sides of industry?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

As, I think, the hon. Gentleman knows, there are many schemes I should like to go ahead with, but in a matter of this sort I must give considerable weight to the priority accorded to the scheme by the responsible highway authority, which is the North Riding County Council.
