HC Deb 16 November 1955 vol 546 cc408-9
32. Mr. Fenner Brockway

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what have been the results of the testing of the bridge linking Windsor and Eton by his officials.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The bridge was tested by officials of the Berkshire County Council assisted by officers of my Department on the night of 31st October-1st November, 1955, but the results are not yet available.

Mr. Brockway

When the right hon. Gentleman receives those results will he bear in mind the need to preserve this picturesque and historic little bridge, and consider two proposals: first, that heavy lorry traffic should be diverted to another route in order also to avoid Eton High Street, and, second, speeding the work on the by-pass which would relieve the bridge?

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Of course I will consider the hon. Gentleman's suggestions, but until I get the results of the test I cannot comment on them.
