HC Deb 15 June 1954 vol 528 cc1713-4
10. Major Anstruther-Gray

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he is taking, in conjunction with other Departments, to ensure that a sufficient number of additional harvest workers will be available, either of Service personnel, European voluntary workers or other helpers; what are his estimated figures under each category; and how they compare with last year.

Mr. J. Stuart

The same steps are being taken as last year, when an adequate force representing 5,650 man-weeks of work was provided, mainly through the Scottish Harvesting Scheme and the Seasonal Labour Scheme. I hope to recruit sufficient workers this year to give about 5,000 man-weeks, the number of grain harvest workers being slightly reduced.
