HC Deb 21 May 1953 vol 515 cc2238-9
18. Mr. Morley

asked the Minister of Education how many local education authorities are planning to allow children to be employed in agriculture during term time this year.

Miss Horsbrugh

Ninety-eight local education authorities have been authorised to grant a limited number of exemptions from school attendance to children of 13 and over to enable them to assist with the gathering of the potato crop if no other source of labour should be available. I am, however, unable to say how many are planning to grant such exemption.

Mr. Morley

When does the Minister think she will be able to put a stop to allowing children to work on the land during term time?

Miss Horsbrugh

I could not answer that question.
