HC Deb 21 May 1953 vol 515 c2238
17. Mr. Morley

asked the Minister of Education how many local education authorities have decided not to admit children to school until the beginning of the term after they have attained the age of five years.

Miss Horsbrugh

I know that some authorities have adopted this practice as one means of easing pressure on some of their schools, but I have no precise information as to the extent of its adoption.

Mr. Morley

Is the right hon. Lady doing anything to assist local authorities to provide additional accommodation so that infant pupils may be admitted at the proper age?

Miss Horsbrugh

Yes, certainly. We are building schools more quickly now than ever before.
