HC Deb 16 December 1953 vol 522 c363
41. Mr. J. Hynd

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if his attention has been called to the unsatisfactory housing conditions of the King's African Rifles at Langata, in Nairobi, and at Nanyuki; and what action he proposes in the matter.

Mr. Lyttelton

Yes, Sir. The Kenya Government are aware of the urgent need to provide new accommodation. This requirement is being considered in connection with their future plans for capital expenditure which are at present being revised.

Mr. Hynd

Is the Minister aware that the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the area described these conditions as shocking and deplorable; that the Deputy Governor said it was the worst camp he had ever seen; that the Colony has contributed only £130,000, and that the Commander-in-Chief has been told it will take 16 years to make these conditions tolerable. Will the right hon. Gentleman undertake to give the House a report of the state of progress?

Mr. Lyttelton

If the hon. Member chooses to put down a Question, I will give him an answer in a short time. This matter is now being reviewed.
