§ 9. Mr. N. Macphersonasked the Minister of Food how much tinned milk has been imported from abroad in 1951 and the first 10 months of 1952; the respective values; and what proportion came from dollar countries.
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeAccording to the records of my Department, imports of tinned condensed milk totalled 48,000 tons in 1951 and 29,000 tons in the first 10 months of 1952. They were valued at £5.2 million and £3.4 million respectively. About 40 per cent. came from dollar sources in 1951; none in 1952.
§ Mr. MacphersonCould we not manufacture all the tinned milk we require in this country? If not, could we not get all we require from within the Commonwealth? In any case, would it not be better in the future to get cheese rather than tinned milk from the dollar countries?
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeIf the hon. Gentleman will look at my answer he will see that no tinned milk came from dollar sources last year. So far as we can we get not only tinned milk but cheese from non-dollar sources.
